In battles you must transform into demons using powers known as "artma", defeat the enemy, and then consume them to gain "karma" (this game's version of experience points).
With a certain amount of karma, the characters can level up. Through consumption of enemies, new skills can be learnt and as the party learn more skills, they can combine skills and use "linkage" within the battle. There is also a command, "break" which enables prevention of enemies' special attacks.
If the enemy's attack and the character's break match, a counterattack will be achieved. The game also introduces a "mantra flow" chart, depicting the character's growth.
